The VE Med Company policy is to consistently research for new advances in Ophthalmic equipment for diagnosis, treatment and Surgical procedures. This means that the Ophthalmic Surgeons at VE MED are always at the cutting edge in providing the most advanced treatment protocols for their patients.
The Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT, is a modern imaging device to diagnose different eye health problems. The OCT images the retina, with a resolution far beyond what the human eye is capable of seeing. For, Optic Nerve analysis in Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Hole AMD, Retinal diseases, the OCT gives accurate diagnostic results. The OCT imaging can be requested as part of an Eye Health check up.
For many years the Humphrey, at Vision Express Medical, has been the “gold-standard” test for monitoring loss of peripheral vision in glaucoma. The Humphrey projects lights spots, of different intensities, in the peripheral field of vision, and the patient responds by pressing a button, as they see them.
The results are a “map” for the ophthalmologist to check any vision loss, and the rate of progression of Glaucoma disease.
NEW Augmented Reality technology is steadily developing, with very high tech apps, to produce results which are comparable with the Humphrey.
Vision Express Medical created a “first” in the Caribbean by purchasing the HERU headsets as visual fields testing equipment.
The process is much easier for patients to concentrate with the headset, and the results are excellent. As this is cloud based technology, testing can be done remotely, and Dr Flores, the Glaucoma ophthalmologist can view the results at the VE Surgery Centre.
This laser device functions by concentrating light in a single spot for very few moments, and permits the doctors to disrupt certain structures that cause diseases or visual loss without having to perform surgery. The Yag Laser is used mostly after cataract surgery, when the capsule (small bag) in which the intraocular lens is held, grows opaque. The laser is able to break down a portion of this bag, and generates almost immediate visual improvement.
Some cases of glaucoma need sometimes to be treated by the Yag Laser, and rarely, very bothersome “floaters” can also be displaced by it.
The advanced Galilei Corneal Topographer Camera is the only one of its kind in the Caribbean. This equipment creates a tridimensional map of the cornea, which aids in the diagnosis of many diseases.
The Galilei provides essential information in the detection of Keratoconus. Surgical treatment with collagen cross linking can then be performed.
The Galilei G6 also performs very detailed measurements of the eye, needed to calibrate and calculate the power of the artificial lens, implanted during cataract surgery.
The Ophthalmic Surgeons at Vision Express Medical, thanks to the Galilei, have been able to insert, patient accepted , accurate multifocal intra ocular lenses, during Refractive Lens Exchange Surgery. These Multifocal IOLS allow patients to obtain good vision at all ranges without spectacles or contact lenses, and of course no future possibility of cataract surgery.
The Iridex diode laser is used to heat some of the tissues in certain eye conditions. In the very late stages of diabetes, the peripheral retina can create problems, and the Iridex laser can be used to alleviate this.
Panretinal Photocoagulation (PRP) is the mainstay treatment for late stages of diabetic retinopathy, and is the main use of the Iridex.
The advanced Iridex laser features “micropulse”. This means the laser can heat the eye tissue for a very short time, to minimize effects to other parts of the eye.
The Iridex is a yellow laser , more advanced than the green laser which was previously used to treat diabetic retinopathy. This advance in laser light means multiple use is possible which was not the case with “ green“ laser .
Iridex laser can also be used for controlling the eye pressure in mild glaucoma, and for certain kinds of retinal inflammation.
The ocular ultrasound is akin to any other ultrasound in the rest of the body. It makes it possible to see parts of the eye that would otherwise be hidden. Its main uses are the imaging of the retina when there is a very dense cataract , and the imaging of the retina after a hemorrhage has been detected, like in late stage diabetes. Ocular ultrasound provides immediate results, and helps the Ophthalmology Team plan surgical interventions to optimize outcomes.
The Oertli, Swiss -made, phacovitrectomy machine is one of the most advanced in the world.
It’s elegant mechanics improve the performance and results of cataract and retinal surgery. The ultrasound handpiece facilitates the breakdown of cataract lenses, and their aspiration through very small incisions, making results predictable, and recovery much faster.
The latest advances in the field of retinal surgery can all be performed using the Oertli machine.
The Oertli titanium glaucoma probe, (the only one in the Caribbean) can perform High Frequency Deep Sclerotomy (HFDS), a minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, enabling certain cases of glaucoma to be well controlled, even in the absence of daily Glaucoma eye drops.
The surgical results, with the Oertli, at Vision Express Medical , will be presented in the regional scientific conferences in 2022.
The Alcon Infinity is probably the most widely used cataract removal machine in the western hemisphere. Its proven technology makes it possible to remove a cataract lens with a microscopic incision of about 2mm.
One of our newest acquisitions, the Appasamy CXL Equipment allows the surgeons to perform a technique called “corneal collagen cross linking”,
Collagen Cross linking stops the progression of a disease called keratoconus, by strengthening the cornea .
This is a non invasive surgery which uses riboflavin and projects small amounts of ultraviolet light onto the cornea.
The weakening of the cornea and the process of visual deterioration can be stopped, and further treatment for vision therapy can be commenced.
Our Zeiss Surgical Microscope surgical microscope is a mainstay in the opthalmic operating room. Thanks to its stereoscopic (3D) oculars, the surgeons obtain the necessary magnification for the performance of precise and predictable surgical procedures. Imported directly from Germany, its optical quality is backed up by its producer, the well known company Carl Zeiss.
Our Ohmeda Anesthesia Machine is a new anesthesia machine that can monitor the patients’ vital signs during the sedation required for cataract surgery. It is a reliable and friendly tool, that allows our professional team to take the best possible care of our patients. It also features the capabilities needed for the induction of general anesthesia, which is rarely required in common ophthalmic practice
